Understanding how the Instagram algorithm works is a full-time job! Fortunately, in late May, the CEO of Instagram shared official information that will help us better understand the workings of this tool.

Here, we explain it step by step!

Instagram Stories

Instagram Stories are a fun tool to use. They have stickers, the option to add music, and other features that allow you to interact with your community.

According to Hootsuite take on the 2023 Instagram algorithm, to make the most of Stories, it is recommended to:

  • Use stickers: Reaction or poll stickers to interact with your community.
  • Ask questions to your followers that result in direct responses.
  • They are only shown to people closest to your account! So make sure to create a few but high-quality stories.

Your World in the Feed

What we see first when entering the app is what we’ll present to the community. In this case, Instagram prioritizes simple images to attract new followers, as well as posts that engage followers for longer periods of time.

Taking this information into account, carousels remain Instagram’s favorite format for providing information to the community. When preparing your post, include these three points: simple content, content that engages your followers, and content that encourages them to spend more time viewing your post.

Reels: The TikTok of Instagram

Reels are the number one option to reach new followers on Instagram. They remain mostly the same: You should use trending audio to help position your reel and try to make it attention-grabbing. You can achieve this by creating short, looping stories, but the creativity is up to you!

Another tip for reels: Remember to select the category or topic your reel covers. This way, you can reach your target audience more easily.

What to Find on the Explore Page?

Now, Instagram’s Explore page can show you accounts you already follow or new accounts related to your interests.

Instagram prioritizes posts from accounts that have a consistent posting frequency on this page. As a content creator, it’s important to consider a monthly plan that establishes a routine. It’s not about posting every day like a news channel, but also not posting at 2 a.m. just because.

Try to find the time and days when your community is most active and post during those moments. By creating a routine, Instagram will notice the stability of your account and position it more in the Explore page.
